Description:

This plate is evidently the only known form on which this scarce view appears.  The school was situated on the hill at the corner of North and East Pleasant Street in Amherst, and opened in 1827.  The second name on the enrollment papers was Henry Ward Beecher, brother of Harriet Beecher Stowe and himself a famous preacher and lecturer.  The success of the school was short lived, as it closed after about five years, in 1833.  The wings of the building were moved and used elsewhere in the town; the center portion was used for various purposes before burning down in 1927.
