This plate was one of a series drawn by J. R. Penniman and engraved by Annin and Smith for Caleb Snow's History of Boston in 1825, which Abel Bowen published. Penniman worked extensively in Boston and central Massachusetts as a graphic artist, illustrator, and painter of everything from furniture to signs to portraits. Born in Milford, Massachusetts in 1782, Penniman died in Baltimore by 1841. He began business in 1803, first in Roxbury, Massachusetts before moving to Boston. He maintained a successful business in Boston until the 1820s.
