This plate is the only known size and form of this view.  Transylvania University was founded in 1780. The word Transylvania, meaning "across the woods" in Latin, was an apt name for the heavily forested region of western Virginia then known as Transylvania Colony and which became the state of Kentucky in 1792. In financial straits following the Civil War, Transylvania University merged with Kentucky University in 1865.
