Description:

This platter shows a view of New York City across New York Bay from the Heights Near Brooklyn.  It is said there are two versions of this platter, here with the man carrying a bundle on a stick over his shoulder and another with the man simply pointing a cane, one for which to keep looking.  UPDATE: The version #02 has been located in the Larsen collection in the Smithsonian.  At some point Andrew Stevenson changed the engraving from Variation No. 02,  featuring a man in the foreground wearing a tall hat and gesturing with a stick, to Variation No. 01,  featuring instead a man wearing a flat hat with a wide brim, and carrying a knapsack on his stick over his shoulder. The overwhelming majority of platters with this view feature Variation No. 01.

See both versions in this exhibit.
