Description:

This plate depicts Faulkbourn(e) Hall, located about 5 miles south east of Braintree in Essex. The manor of Faulkbourne was given to Hamo Dapifer by his uncle, William the Conqueror, after the Norman Conquest. The Hall shown here was built in 1440 and is a red-bricked building with turrets. It incorporates an earlier Norman tower. It has been described as the most impressive 15th century brick mansion in England.  It is shown here because of the four medallion portraits. The Erie Canal insert here is Entrance of the Canal into the Hudson at Albany.
