Pattern Category: Places Series: Beauties of America Object Type: Dinner and Dessert Wares Dimensions: Description:
The only known forms with this view by John and William Ridgway are this extremely rare cup plate with no marks on the back, and a ladle to a soup tureen. This fine Greek Revival building on Chestnut Street in Philadelphia was built 1818-1824 to house the Second Bank of the United States, incorporated in 1816 with a 20 year charter.
A conflict arose between bank president Nicholas Biddle and president Andrew Jackson, as Jackson felt the bank wielded far too much economic power, and eventually Jackson vetoed its re-charter in 1836. The United States government bought the building in 1844 and it served as the Customs House until a new building was built in the 1930s. This view is commonly known as the Customs House but in fact before 1830 when it was produced this view would have been known only as the Second Bank of the United States.
