Considered Rare Description: In this position, the scene below the finial of the tureen lid shows New York Bay. This view has Castle Garden and New York on the left, Governor's Island with Castle Williams on the right. Designed in 1807 by Benjamin Franklin's nephew Jonathan Williams and named for him, this "impregnable" fort was erected prior to the War of 1812 as part of the harbor defenses. This view appears only on the lid to the tureen whose base is Belleville on the Passaic River and a ladle. The top part above the finial of this lid shows Highlands at West Point, Hudson River #1 (see that view in this exhibit). |
