Chief Justice Marshall, Troy LinePattern Category: Naval and Marine Series: Shell Border, Irregular or Grotto-Shaped Center Object Type: Dinner and Dessert Wares Dimensions:
Description: References note the resemblance of this view on this plate to the "Union Line" version, although close inspection reveals a number of differences in the ship and its rigging. This steam vessel was launched in 1825 and became known as the "Race Horse of the North River" after a record run of 14 1/2 hours from New York to Albany. The boat was lost as a result of a gale in Long Island Sound in April 1835. Run aground just east of the New Haven, Connecticut lighthouse after an unsuccessful attempt to reach New Haven harbor, nearly all of its passengers and crew were saved. Its remains were offered at public auction later the same year. The view is labeled Troy Line and identified as Chief Justice Marshall. The names are either on the boat, or on the banners and flags. |
