Considered Rare Description: This 7.25 inch plate is unique, only two examples being known, this one from the Larsen Collection at the Smithsonian, and the other in the Morse Collection in the American Antiquarian. Hurl Gate (or Hell Gate) is the name of a treacherous stretch of water in a narrow strait in the East River, the graveyard of many Dutch vessels. It is located between Manhattan and Long Island, New York. The steamboat shown may represent the first steamboat navigating these waters, the Fulton. At left center is a battery and blockhouse on Mill Rock. There are warehouses on the opposite shore.
