Print Title: VIEW OF THE AQUEDUCT BRIDGE AT LITTLE FALLS Description:
Engraving on paper signed J. Eights Del. and engraved by Rawden, Clark & Co. Albany. The print was made after a drawing on paper in ink, wash and pencil made by James Eights in 1823, now in the collection of the Albany Institute of History & Art.
In 1795 the Western Inland Lock & Navigation Company had built the Little Falls Canal north of the Mohawk River, to allow boats to navigate around the rapids there. To connect the Little Falls Canal to the Erie canal required the construction of the aqueduct crossing the Mohawk River, allowing boat traffic on the Erie Canal to enter Little Falls harbor. The work was completed by 1822 and Little Falls Aqueduct remained in service until 1881 at which time it was abandoned, drained, and maintenance ceased.
