Hudson River Portfolio

The Hudson River Portfolio was a landmark in American landscape painting and printmaking. The work was the result of collaboration between the Dublin born, William Guy Wall (1792 - after 1864) and London born, John Hill (1770-1850), who both moved to America in the early 19th century. In1820 Wall went on a sketching tour of the Hudson River Valley and its environs. As a master printmaker, John Hill was engaged to make engravings from Wall’s watercolors and the resulting Hudson River Portfolio, was published by Henry J. Megarey 1823-24 and re-issued by G. & C. H. Carville in 1827. The Portfolio's twenty topographical views were among the first images to celebrate America’s natural beauty. Their value was immediately recognized by those who wanted to provide goods that appealed to American sensibilities, and at least two potters used the images on their blue printed wares.
